A Day at Harker's Middle School
Close to friends, family and colleagues gathered on the upper school campus on Oct. Speakers movingly spoke of the vision, passion and contributions — including the opening of the upper school in — that Mrs.
Nichols poured into Harker to make it the school it is today. Fittingly, the memorial was held in the newly opened Rothschild Performing Arts Center, which was her passion and the most recent of many improvements at Harker that Mrs. Nichols oversaw. A photo slide show shared memories of Mrs. Video clips of interviews with Diana and Howard were also shared. Additional speakers were: Marie Clifford, board member and Mrs.
Visitors were encouraged to attend the reception, lovingly called a Boston Tea Party in honor of Mrs. Permanent plaques have been installed on the front of Nichols Hall on the upper school campus to honor the legacy of Howard and Diana Nichols. Educator, environmentalist, philanthropist and business leader Diana Nichols passed away Sept. She was Along with her husband, Howard Nichols, Diana Nichols was key to shaping Harker into the quintessential 21st-century school.
Her own path developed her strong beliefs in the need for excellent education grounded in scholarly research and academic discipline. Born March 25, in New York, Mrs. She moved to California to teach biology at Crystal Springs School in Hillsborough, then joined Harker as a biology teacher in In the early s, by which time she was serving as assistant principal, the visionary partnership of Howard and Diana Nichols was beginning to have an historic impact on the future of the school.
At this time, Mrs. Nichols became an advocate for the emotional and mental well-being of the students and introduced the Harker Personal Development program, teaching Harker students techniques for stress reduction and relaxation. Developed with the help of Dr. Her success in directing the creation and development of curricula for the upper school was noticed by The University of California, and in she was named to an advisory board that worked with other schools that were creating syllabi for UC submission.
A passionate believer in environmental preservation and sustainability, Mrs. Inshe was selected by Santa Clara County to coordinate Earth Day activities for area schools.

Administration seems largely even handed; our kids have friends and socialize away from school with them. Academically, the classes keep moving forward and when our kids work hard notes, homework, textbooks, study guides all complete they get good grades, when they let things slide, grades slide, so perfect situation to train them to be ready for high school and college.
I have never seen or heard of an instance of bullying in person or from my kids, and the after school staff is headed by full time employees who are committed to doing a good job. The upper school was added to the K-8 program inwith the first class of graduates in Scores of 4 and 5: 88 percent; scores of 3, 4 or 5: 97 percent. Harker had 10 perfect scores in AP Microeconomics in In the Siemens CompetitionHarker School had four national semifinalists in both andand six in In the competition, the school had six regional semifinalists and four regional finalists. InHarker had four regional finalists and six semifinalists: one-fourth of the regional finalists in California were from Harker School.
Between the first graduating class of until Harker high school has produced a record 92 semi-finalists and 18 finalists. From to12 Harker School seniors were named national semifinalists, the largest number of any school west of the Mississippi in those years.
In the Regeneron Science Talent Search competition, Harker had seven semi-finalists, the most of any school in California and three finalists, tied with another school as the most of any school in USA. Harker School offers an athletics program which includes footballvolleyballsoccertrack and fieldbasketballbaseballtennisgolfsoftballlacrossecross country runningswimmingwater polowrestlingcheerleadingyogafitnessphysical educationand dance.
Students are encouraged to participate in sports from 4th grade onwards. Some sports, such as lacrosse, diving, track and field, and tennis, are only offered in middle school and high school. Most sports are separated by gender, but others remain co-ed. In AugustHarker finished construction on their new athletic center on the upper school campus.
Harker School offers a diverse K—12 performing arts program. The upper school program offers courses in vocal and instrumental ensembles, acting, dance, and technical theater, as well as an intense focus program named the Certificate Program.
This Certificate Program allows upper school students to "major" in a specific discipline within the performing arts, requiring them to take specialized classes and participate in performances in order to graduate.Ldplayer bypass
Students are guided by an advisor. All upper school performing arts teachers remain active professionals in their respective disciplines.
At the end of their senior years, candidates perform a piece from their portfolios at a formal senior showcase and receive their certificate designating completion of the program.
Cantilena, a classical women's vocal ensemble, toured Italy in Vocal groups in the upper school include the show choir Downbeat! Harker School organizes a play each fall, a musical each spring, and a student-directed showcase each winter.
Harker's instrumental music program includes an orchestra and a jazz band, and as of the —13 school year, a "Lab Band" jazz ensemble for underclassmen. The dance program at Harker School focuses on many different styles of dance, and encourages Upper School Dance Conservatory students to choreograph many of the numbers in the annual Upper School Dance Production at the end of January. In FebruaryHarker finished construction on their new performing arts building on the Saratoga campus, which includes a seat theater, dressing rooms and practice rooms,  and a Bosendorfer VC CS grand piano.
The Harker School Lower Division
Harker has a school newspaper Winged Post yearbook Talonnews website Harker Aquila, formerly talonwp. The school's art and literature magazine, HELMhas published 17 print issues as of late The middle school is located on the Blackford campus, the former site of Blackford High School.
The site has been rented since the —06 school year. Beforegrade 8 was the final year at Harker, and middle school graduates matriculated to private and public high schools in the Bay Area. Since the opening of the upper school inmost students choose to remain at Harker School after middle school.
Many components ease the shift from the lower school to the middle school, including various athletic and artistic programs. There is also a fine arts requirement: students in grades 7 and 8 must take at least one arts class or participate in one art event in order to graduate sixth graders are encouraged to do so, as well.Our daughter has gone to Harker since their inaugural preschool class started.
She loves it and so do we. Teachers are great and after school programs are plentiful.

Even though it takes an We are just about to enter our third session of summer school for our kindergarten age boy and we are thrilled with Harker!! Our regret is that we didn't apply for school this year. Our son has Not worth the money you pay out. For what it's worth, at this age you can get by at a Montessori school and get the same result.

Won't be attending next year. For K-5, students are ""leveled"" for Math and Language Arts. There are three levels - which are 6mo ahead, 12 mo ahead, and 18 mo ahead of grade level. In this way your kids get advanced instruction at their academic level which still with same-age classmates i. Further, many like my kids have different abilities for Math and Language Arts.
My kids - all three at Harker - have moved between levels both up and down to find the right balance between struggle and challenge. After-school BEST activities are stellar! Athletics are inclusive and competitive and the coaching is great. Teachers are simply amazing, and the kids are really the academic rock stars of the future.
This year, the high school kids at Harker claimed 11 of the perfect AP test scores globally. Absolutely amazing. Most people have heard about Harker's exceptional academics I am a parent that let Harker do, what Harker does Friends and fun are plentiful. I cannot ask for anything better, than a child who LOVES the school, teachers, and classmates, and developed a strong love of learning!
The one thing I wanted to offer as a parent is the best education that I would be able to provide and I have been completely satisfied over the years with no regrets. I was just lectured by my own 10 year old child that parents, teachers, and students cannot ""slack"" off the last few days of school because every day counts, and every day makes a difference!
The academics are successful due to meticulous attention to the details of what each child needs. Children are ""challenged without being stressed"". The teachers, staff, and facilities people are not only fabulous at their jobs, but they are warm and welcoming to the children and unfailingly courteous and receptive to the parents.
The school has an entire separate staff compare to really great adult camp counselors whose job it is to make recess, lunch, before-school, and after-school fun - offering activities from music, art and science to all sorts of athletics, informal games, and unstructured playground time.
Even the uniforms are well thought out. They look sharp, wear well, and are comfortable for the classroom and the playground. The children, if you see them in class or on the playground, look happy, natural, and comfortable.The depth and breadth of our curricular and extracurricular offerings allows students to find and follow paths as unique as they are.
At the lower school, we provide a nurturing and supportive environment, and a unique system of tailoring to be sure that your child is placed just right in his or her classes and feeling great about school.
Your child will love our Eagle Buddies program, too, which pairs third graders with sophomores in a fun partnership that continues until the older buddy graduates. Harker students share a deep love of learning, are motivated, curious, dedicated, kind and respectful young people.
We invite you to join us in the lower school. My favorite things about Harker are the challenge it provides and the athletic program. The teachers are pretty cool, too. You might like to get involved in the dance program or other after-school activities that Harker offers; there is a wide variety.
